Author Guidelines

Welcome to the Author Guidelines for BAITA Engineering: Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering  (accessible at https://baitaengineering.org/). These guidelines outline the editorial standards, manuscript submission procedures, structural requirements, and referencing standards required for publishing with BAITA Engineering: Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

BAITA Engineering: Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality original research, technical communications, and comprehensive reviews in marine engineering, naval architecture, ocean engineering, offshore systems, and related applied engineering disciplines.

1. Editorial Policies & Publishing Ethics

BAITA Engineering strictly adheres to international academic publishing standards modeled on Elsevier publishing ethics and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

1.1 Originality and Plagiarism

  • Manuscripts submitted to BAITA Engineering must be original, unpublished work and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
  • All submitted manuscripts undergo similarity checking via Turnitin or similar detection software. Manuscripts exceeding an overall similarity index of 20% (or 5% from a single source, excluding bibliography and standard equations) will be returned to the authors without peer review.

1.2 Authorship Criteria

Authorship should be restricted to individuals who have made a substantial intellectual contribution to:

  1. The conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study.
  2. Drafting or revising the manuscript critically for important intellectual content.
  3. Final approval of the version to be published.

All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in the Acknowledgments section.

1.3 Declaration of Interest & Funding

Authors must explicitly declare any financial or personal relationships with people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. A Declaration of Competing Interest statement must be included at the end of the manuscript. Funding sources supporting the research must also be detailed in a dedicated Funding section.

1.4 Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

In accordance with Elsevier editorial standards:

  • Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies (e.g., Large Language Models) should only be used to improve the readability and language of the manuscript.
  • AI technologies cannot be listed as an author or co-author.
  • Authors must disclose the use of AI tools in a dedicated Declaration of AI and AI-assisted Technologies section before the reference list.

3. Submission Checklist

Before submitting your manuscript via the online portal (https://baitaengineering.org/), please ensure the following files and items are prepared:

  1. Title Page (Unblinded): Contains manuscript title, full names, affiliations, email addresses, ORCID IDs, and corresponding author details.
  2. Main Manuscript File (Blinded): Contains full text, abstract, keywords, main sections, figures/tables embedded or appended, and references. Must NOT contain author names or affiliations to facilitate double-blind peer review.
  3. Cover Letter: Brief letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief highlighting the novelty, scope alignment, and significance of the research.
  4. Graphical Abstract (Optional but recommended): A concise, visual summary of the main findings (PNG/JPEG format, min. 300 DPI).

4. Manuscript Formatting & Structure

Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or LaTeX (.tex) format.

4.1 Page Layout & Typography

  • Page Size: Standard A4 size.
  • Margins: 2.5 cm (1 inch) on all sides.
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt, single or 1.5 line spacing.
  • Line & Page Numbers: Continuous line numbering and page numbering must be enabled throughout the manuscript to facilitate reviewer feedback.

4.2 Article Structure

Title Page (Separate File for Blind Review)

  • Title: Concise, informative, and specific (maximum 20 words). Avoid acronyms and formula notation where possible.
  • Author Names & Affiliations: First name, middle initial(s), and surname. Include full institutional addresses (Department, Institution, City, Country) and zip codes.
  • Corresponding Author: Clearly indicate the corresponding author with an asterisk (*) and provide a institutional email address and phone number.
  • ORCID: Include ORCID IDs for all authors where available.

Main Manuscript File

  1. Title: Same as on the Title Page (without author names).
  2. Abstract:
    • Single paragraph between 150–250 words.
    • Must summarize the Background/Objective, Methodology, Key Results, and Main Conclusions.
    • Do not cite references or use non-standard abbreviations in the abstract.
  3. Keywords: Provide 4–6 specific keywords separated by semicolons (e.g., Naval architecture; Computational fluid dynamics; Hull resistance; Ship propulsion).
  4. Main Text (IMRaD Structure):
    • 1. Introduction: State the research background, review existing literature, identify the research gap, and clearly state the objectives/hypotheses.
    • 2. Materials and Methods / Methodology: Provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be reproduced. Describe experimental setups, numerical modeling, mathematical formulations, software versions, and boundary conditions.
    • 3. Results: Present findings clearly using text, tables, and figures. Avoid redundant presentation of data in both tables and figures.
    • 4. Discussion: Interpret the significance of results, compare findings with previous literature, discuss limitations, and highlight practical or theoretical implications. (Results and Discussion may be combined if appropriate).
    • 5. Conclusion: Summarize major findings, contributions to engineering practice, and potential avenues for future research.
  5. Acknowledgments (Include in Title Page or unblinded final version): List funding sources, technical assistance, or institutional support.
  6. Conflict of Interest Statement: Explicit declaration of any financial or non-financial conflicts.
  7. Data Availability Statement: Indicate where data supporting the results can be accessed (e.g., public repositories, upon reasonable request, or included in article).
  8. References: Compiled according to APA 7th Edition guidelines.

5. Mathematical Equations, Units, and Artwork

5.1 Units and Symbols

  • All measurements must be expressed in International System of Units (SI).
  • Symbols for physical quantities should be in italics (e.g., v for velocity, P for pressure).

5.2 Mathematical Equations

  • Equations must be editable (using Microsoft Equation Editor or MathType), centered, and sequentially numbered in parentheses flush right:

  • Refer to equations in text as "Equation 1" or "Eq. (1)".

5.3 Figures and Tables

  • Figures:
    • Embed within text near their first citation.
    • Vector graphics (EPS, PDF) or high-resolution raster images (TIFF, JPEG at min. 300 DPI for photos, 600 DPI for line art).
    • Captions must be placed below the figure (e.g., Figure 1. Mesh generation for the submarine hull geometry.).
  • Tables:
    • Editable Word or LaTeX tables (do not insert tables as static images).
    • Captions must be placed above the table (e.g., Table 1. Principal dimensions of the benchmark barge.).
    • Footnotes below the table should be designated with superscript lowercase letters (, ).

6. Citation and Reference Format (APA 7th Edition)

BAITA Engineering uses the APA (American Psychological Association) 7th Edition citation style. All publications cited in the text must appear in the Reference list, and vice versa.

6.1 In-Text Citations

In-text citations follow the Author-Date format:

  • One Author: (Wijaya, 2023) or Wijaya (2023) stated that...
  • Two Authors: (Jin & Zhang, 2022) or Jin and Zhang (2022) argued...
  • Three or More Authors: (Laksana et al., 2021) or Laksana et al. (2021) demonstrated...
  • Multiple Citations: Group citations alphabetically inside parentheses, separated by semicolons: (Jin & Zhang, 2022; Laksana et al., 2021; Wijaya, 2023).
  • Direct Quotes / Specific Page Numbers: Include page or paragraph numbers: (Wijaya, 2023, p. 24).

6.2 Reference List Rules

  • Arrange entries alphabetically by the first author's last name.
  • Use a hanging indent of 0.5 inches (1.27 cm) for each entry.
  • Provide full DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) formatted as full URLs ([https://doi.org/](https://doi.org/)...) for all sources where available.
  • For journal titles, capitalize all major words and italicize the title and volume number.

7. Submission & Peer Review Process

7.1 Submission Procedure

  1. Create an account or log in at https://baitaengineering.org/index.php/journal/submission.
  2. Select the appropriate section (e.g., Original Research Article, Technical Note, Review).
  3. Complete the submission checklist and upload manuscript files according to section 3.
  4. Input all author metadata, abstract, and keywords into the OJS system.

7.2 Double-Blind Peer Review

BAITA Engineering operates a double-blind peer review process:

  1. Initial Screening: The Editor-in-Chief assesses scope alignment, scientific rigor, formatting, and plagiarism.
  2. External Review: Eligible papers are assigned to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers in the relevant field.
  3. Editorial Decision: Based on reviewer reports, the Editor renders one of four decisions:
    • Accept Submission: Accepted without further changes.
    • Revisions Required: Minor technical/editorial changes needed.
    • Resubmit for Review: Major revisions required; subject to a second round of peer review.
    • Decline Submission: Manuscript rejected due to scientific flaws, out of scope, or insufficient novelty.

8. Post-Acceptance & Open Access

  • Proofreading: Corresponding authors will receive PDF page proofs before publication. Proofs must be returned within 48 to 72 hours.
  • Open Access: Articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing free distribution, adaptation, and sharing with appropriate citation.
  • Archiving: Articles are permanently archived and assigned a DOI upon final publication.
