Editorial Policy: Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-Assisted Technologies

BAITA Engineering: Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering recognises the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI technologies in research and manuscript preparation. To ensure accountability, transparency, and integrity, the journal enforces the following policy regarding the use of these tools.

1. AI as an Author

  • Strict Prohibition: AI tools, large language models (LLMs, such as ChatGPT, Claude, etc.), and generative AI software cannot be listed as authors or co-authors on any submitted manuscript.
  • Rationale: Authorship implies accountability, legal rights, and responsibilities (such as data accuracy and ethical compliance) that AI technologies cannot assume.

2. Use of AI in Manuscript Writing and Editing

Authors may use AI tools to improve the readability, grammar, or language of their papers (e.g. standard copy-editing tools). However, if generative AI is used to produce drafts, summarise text, or generate substantial content,

  • Transparency: Authors must explicitly declare the use of AI tools in their cover letters and within the Acknowledgements or a dedicated Declaration of AI Use section in the manuscript.
  • Accountability: The authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, validity, and integrity of all content generated by AI, including ensuring that AI-generated text does not introduce factual errors, bias, or plagiarised material.

 3. Use of AI in Images, Figures, and Data

  • Data Generation: The use of generative AI to create, alter, or manipulate research data, results, or scientific images is strictly prohibited unless it is part of the specific methodology of the research (which must be comprehensively documented).
  • Illustrative Figures: AI-generated images or artwork are generally discouraged. If used for conceptual diagrams, they must be clearly disclosed in the figure captions, citing the tool used and specific prompts.

4. Mandatory Declaration Template for Authors

If AI tools were utilised beyond basic spell-checking, authors must include the following statement before the References section:

During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [Name of Tool/Service] to [Reason for use, e.g., improve readability/translate text/structure the literature review]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and takes full responsibility for the content of the publication.
